about

Full Spectrum returns with another edition pulled from the dusty archives of experimental percussionist Drew Holder’s Lavatone project. When The Moon Fills With Blood picks up where our last Lavatone release [see: Lavatone, 2018] left off, expanding on the lo-fi desert vibes of that tape with looping rhythms, resonant drones and snatches of radio ether captured from the living air.

Originally recorded in 1996-97, when the artist was freshly graduated from audio school and relocated to Amarillo, Texas, these jams were primarily constructed on a humble 8-track Tascam Portastudio. It was intended to be a wider and deeper album than its predecessor, with an ear towards audio experimentation. Frame drums, assorted small percussion instruments, steel drums and field recordings make up the core of the album, all pushed through stereo effects and recorded straight to tape. The artist’s brother, Luke, lends his guitar playing to the track “Blow Torch,” while album closer “Wait” features the artist’s first forays into the world of analog synthesis.

Originally released in an edition of only a few dozen tapes that were primarily distributed to the artist’s personal friends and acquaintances in the Amarillo music community, featuring handmade holographic artwork and hand scratched lettering, Full Spectrum is honored to bring this unheralded work to a wider audience nearly 25 years after its initial release.
