Full Spectrum Records is pleased to present a new EP from Ryan Jobes’ Sunken Cathedral project, Sounds for Walking in Circles. The spiritual follow-up to last summer’s Steam Turned to Ash release, these tracks provide an open-ended exploration of harmonic relationships, both radiant and expansive in nature, that delivers a becalmed counterpoint to the previous album’s tension-filled sonics.

Recorded in both Oakland, California and New York City between 2020 and 2021, using a variety of analog synths and effects processors, these tracks are a direct continuation from the powerful harmonic relationships present in “Sinai Steps,” the b-side for Steam Turned to Ash. From there, Jobes set out to structure compositions around simple tonal structures and open voicing. By focusing on the interactions within the upper harmonic range and experimenting with different textures to accentuate or obscure this sonic material, he was able to introduce variation and supple movement to what might otherwise be exceedingly placid drones.

Featuring baritone guitar recordings from New York City’s Will Hayes – who is perhaps best known for his contributions to the late Jóhann Jóhannsson’s soundtrack for the film ‘Mandy’ – which Jobes resampled and incorporated into these arrangements, ‘Sounds for Walking in Circles’ serves as a meditative space that sinks deeper into the hazy sound world staked out on previous releases.

Think of it, perhaps, as the calm that follows the storm.
