Full Spectrum Records welcomes percussionist, improvisor and composer Jordan Glenn into the fold for his latest solo work, ‘Flustered.’ A remarkable study in improvised rhythm and stylistic economy, ‘Flustered’ stands apart as perhaps something new for our humble imprint and a rare treat for fans of solo jazz percussion.

Originally from Eugene, Oregon, Jordan relocated to the Bay Area in 2006 and received an MFA from Mills College. In the years since, his orbit has intersected with such avant garde luminaries as Fred Frith, Zeena Parkins, Roscoe Mitchell, Rhys Chatham, and John Schott, as well as a host of ensembles, including Jack O’ The Clock, tUnE-yArDs, and the Oakland Active Orchestra, among many, many others. He has also worked as a band leader in a number of ensemble settings, most notably among them the percussion-heavy large ensemble BEAK.

While the majority of Jordan’s musical output has found him working with groups, he’s rarely had the opportunity to truly perform as a soloist. He has engaged in a bare handful of solo shows over the past decade – sometimes focusing on composed works, other times improvisation – but Jordan has never followed the thread through to creating a solo percussion record in the studio. Of course, like many musicians during the early days of the pandemic, he suddenly had more than enough time on his hands to tinker, think, and work on the concepts that would come to form the basis of ‘Flustered.’ Once these ideas hit a critical mass, Jordan booked time with his friend Zachary Watkins at Santo in Oakland and prepared himself for the work at hand.

At its core, ‘Flustered’ hones in on Jordan’s dedication to improvisation in all its myriad meanings – structural, compositional, and emotional. Augmenting his drum kit with a selection of custom designed and hand-constructed instruments that he’s created over the years, he went into the studio without judgment or agenda. The end result is a collection of rhythms and percussive explorations that are at once exciting, honest, and deeply surprising.

This is primal music, vital to its core and devoid of pretense. We hope you enjoy it.
