about

Full Spectrum is pleased to present an immense new collaboration from avant-garde percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani and the saxophonist Rhonda Taylor entitled, City of Rocks, which compiles a set of sprawling free instrumentals recorded at Nakatani’s home studio in the winter of 2018. This album is, at its core, an ode to the vastness of the American Southwest, a region that both artists call “home.”

Living in the desert allows one to experience the world in terms of large-scale, awe-inspiring natural spectacles: endless turquoise skies cast in relief against the subtle orange gradient of the land, brutal geological protrusions, punishing temperatures, wind as a constantly weathering force that equalizes all to dust. While they perhaps didn’t set out with this intention clear in their mind, you can hear the influence of the environment embedded within the duo’s shared sense of timing and texture. The presence of the natural can be felt throughout these recordings – slow, beautiful and violent.

City of Rocks tumbles out of the speakers as a pure reflection of what it is to be alive in the face of such an unyielding ecosystem. A vital and urgent sonic document, we hope that you find it to be a fortifying companion for these troubled times.
